2 tbsp Oil, तेल

1 Large Onion, chopped, प्याज

2 Garlic Cloves, chopped, लहसुन

½ tsp Black Pepper Powder, काली मिर्च पाउडर

1 tsp Cumin Powder, जीरा पाउडर

½ tsp Salt to Taste, नमक स्वादानुसार

1 tbsp Tomato Paste, टमाटर का पेस्ट

½ tsp Red Chilli Powder, लाल मिर्च पाउडर

1 cup Masoor Dal, soaked, मसूर दाल

1 Large Carrot, chopped, गाजर

2 cups Vegetable Stock, वेजिटेबल स्टॉक

1 cup Hot Water, पानी

3 tbsp Lime Juice, नींबू का रस

½ tsp Roasted Cumin Powder, जीरा पाउडर

2 tbsps Coriander Leaves, chopped, धनिया


  • In a kadai, heat oil add onion and saute till translucent. Add garlic and saute till golden brown.
  • Add cumin powder, black pepper powder, salt to taste and mix well.
  • Add tomato paste, red chilli powder, masoor dal and saute well.
  • Add carrot, vegetable stock mix well, add 2 cup hot water.
  • Cover with the lid and cook for 30 minutes.
  • Blend the mixture, add lime juice, roasted cumin powder and mix well.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.


  1. Yes. Wow! A few changes that I made were to add small, diced potato near end of sauté; 1/4 Tsp of Black Cardamom and a pinch of Garam near end of 30 minutes; black salt used (in place of Himalayan salt) and replaced oil with ghee. I did not want to make a tadka, so I added toasted cumin seed instead. This recipe really lends itself to personalizing it for individual taste: thank you for sharing it.
